Knit Baby hat for beginners – Free Pattern

Knit Baby hat for beginners, free pattern for a newborn and for a 3/6 months old.

knit baby hat for beginners - Free knitting pattern. Beginners pattern to knit a baby hat, for a newborn and for a 3/6 months old.

*Disclosure

This pattern is great for beginners because it only uses the knit st, purl st, and knit 2 tog, which is just a modification f the basic knit stitch…  It’s also knitted on the row instead of on the round, like most hat patterns. Also known as knitted flat, which means you don’t even need a circular needle or DPNs (double pointed needles).
So, if you’re not very comfortable knitting on the round just yet, this easy pattern will be perfect for you.
Hope you like this free knitting pattern 😀

  2. Hi I made the newborn hat using the pattern …but it came out very small ..I used DK 100g …thought this would be OK but obviously not ?

    1. Oh no!! Sorry that it didn’t turn out right.
I used worsted yarn. And although some patterns can come up just right when switching, something so small like a newborn hat can be greatly affected even if the yarn is just slightly smaller.

    2. I made mine with DK but I needed 6mm needles to get the right tension. Mine seems to be a reasonable size.

      1. Yeah, adjusting the tension is necessary when substituting yarn weights. I’m glad it came at a good size. I also have patterns designed for DK, they can be found at the end of this post.
My two baby girls wore these hats, so if it comes with a similar size I’m sure it will fit other babies ^_^

    1. When a number of sets is stated at the 3nd of row or round in parentheses that refers to that row or round stitch count. If a pattern doesn’t have any increases or decreases then this is not necessary so it won’t show. But in this case after all those knit 2 together, at the end of the rou d you should have 6 sts remaining. The stitch count is just there so you could double check, if you choose to do so.

  21. I tried this pattern using size 6 needles and yarn size 4, but it came out super small! I’m a new knitter, so I’m not sure what happened. Any tips?
